It is odd. In his book on the annuals Paul Magrs comments that, particularly in the late 1970s, "The people who made the show didn't read the Annuals and the people who made the Annuals didn't watch the show".
It may have been that the producers of the comic strips, since they had an ongoing product rather than essentially a Christmas stocking stuffer, were keener to tie into the show more closely. Though in the 1960s I think the comics were rather further from the show than they later became .
