I think it doesn't alter the fact that it's stupid to take anything that happens in a TV show as a deliberate attack on fans (*cough* except maybe for the WhizzKid in Dr Who's Greatest Show in the Galaxy) and on the whole I'd defend his right to say "no this is unacceptable" when abuse gets sent his way as a result.
