Thinking about it I've not discussed this in a general way with people, its specifically the change in attitude following having children that struck me.
I'm disgracefully easily to manipulate on a shallow level, I've been known to cry at Neighbours and, on seeing me screaming and cowering on the sofa while watching Shaun of the Dead, a friend was caused to comment that he now realised why I never watched real horror movies. However I'm always basically aware that this is just manipulation and part of my enjoyment comes from going along with being manipulated.
Since having Gwendolen seeing child hurt/in peril stuff hits me in a completely different way, its no longer fun to be sitting blubbing on the sofa but actually seems terrible, even more so when its a real-life news story or similar.
Maybe some people react in this way all the time, I've never really thought to compare reactions on that level. I was specifically aware of Mum's commenting on this sort of alteration in reaction.
