I have picked up a small number of midge bites, but honestly not that bad. I had sprayed liberally with deet mind. They really can't cope with wind which helps when walking in the hills. I did have a horrible experience once many years ago but, on the whole, I think Scotland's reputation for hordes of the things is a bit exaggerated - an awful lot of the time they are not much of a problem.
