Well it seems LJ has changed all its login options which means among other things that

  • I can't cross-post from DreamWidth, nor set up my account there so it can crosspost
  • I can't export my journal with my preferred backup tool
  • I can't use ljlogin on Firefox to switch between accounts

Notifications of comments on my blog posts on [livejournal.com profile] louisedennis have also stopped working again, though at the moment [livejournal.com profile] lsellersfic appears to be unaffected.

The long and short of which is that if I appear to be maintaining radio silence for a bit it's not personal its just that my posts ain't reaching you and I'm not getting your comments on anything that I actually do bother to post separately. I think if I comment on other people's posts and they respond I will still get the notification (I did last time this happened) but if I mysteriously stop responding even in those situations then its honestly not that I'm cold-shouldering or ignoring anyone.

Any yes I do know that this is entirely my fault for trying to use LJ via various third-party tools (well apart from the notifications thing), so please don't lecture me on how if I was a good, loyal, little LJ-only user it would all be all right and that my whinging is just self-entitled bullshit. I'm not telling anyone else where they should or should not be blogging, or what tools they should or should not be using, I'm just reporting why I may be going quiet for a while.

PS. Security problem yesterday was, apparently, a caching problem although LJ's account of it isn't entirely consistent with what users were reporting (nothing new there, and lots of potential explanations for the inconsistencies).

Since crossposting to LJ has gone fubar on my other journal.

I'm also, once again, not receiving comment notifications from [livejournal.com profile] louisedennis.

EDIT: Well that would seem to confirm it, can no longer crosspost to LJ from either of my accounts.

A new LJ bug has people randomly logged in to the wrong accounts

There doesn't seem to be much you can do about this and the chances of someone actually hostile or known to you getting logged in to your account must be extremely low. However if its vitally important to you that no random stranger gets to see your locked posts then you might want to consider deleting them...

It also might be a good moment to double check you have all your account recovery information set properly (if you no longer have access to the email address you used when you created the journal, I understand recovery can be tricky, so if you don't it may be worth checking out what you would need) and if you back up your journal somewhere then, again, possibly not a bad moment to make sure you have an up-to-date backup. It doesn't hurt to do that kind of thing from time to time anyway and this way, if you're extremely unlucky and someone malicious does get in, change your password and delete your entries, you will be able to get your account back and you won't lose any information.

Anyone else not getting email notifications of comments on their LJ posts? I'm getting notifications just fine for [livejournal.com profile] lsellersfic but I've not got any in over a week for [livejournal.com profile] louisedennis.

I've just re-enabled Facebook connect (I think without getting comments cross-posted although who knows!). This is a test to see what it's doing.

Incidentally I'm not under the illusion that I can force anyone with access to a flocked entry not to discuss its contents with others any more than I can prevent anyone repeating a private conversation I have with them face to face, although I reserve the right to take a dim view of such behaviour (depending, of course, upon what is discussed and with whom). I can see that livejournal's new and exciting ticky boxes increase the likelihood that flocked information could be exposed by mistake but I suspect the possibility for something really incriminating getting out are small. Obviously, if it does turn out to be a problem, I shall be turning off commenting on livejournal and restricting it to Dreamwidth only but I very much doubt it'll come to that. I mean you are all sensible enough not to tick a ticky box simply because it's there, right?

Does anyone on my flist know what you do if a community you're a member of appears to have been hacked?

[livejournal.com profile] tex_latex - a low volume comm for users of the latex document preparation system appears to have been, judging by the last post, and I'm wondering if anyone knows who I should contact? I'm assuming that, since it's low volume, there may not already have been a vast deluge of complaint.

EDIT: Of course, I'm also worrying that I've done something horrendous to myself by clicking on the fake link in that post, but can't off hand see anything fishy and I'm on a Mac which protects against a lot of random exploits.

This is the most coherent summary of what is going on that I have seen. It isn't unbiased or neutral, but I'm not sure anything could be at this particular moment in time.

I have also personally been impressed by these four posts, among hundreds:

I Didn't Dream of Dragons
RaceFail: Once more with Misdirection in particular the attempt to redirect the discussion into more profitable channels.
sees fire (which stands alone but is a response to the sadly less admirable, due to a couple of profound missteps, cease fire)
March 6th 2009 - because she continues to try to engage with and refuses to explicitly write off her critics, both of which I can see must be strong temptations.

I almost disabled comments on this post, but decided that would be cowardly. But I really think there is very little to be said about any aspect of this from any of the myriad sides to the multiple issues involved that has not been said a hundred times, often in a more eloquent and informed manner than I could hope to match. This is one of the reasons I'm restricting myself above to linking with minimal commentary. This post is, in no small part, intended for my personal archival purposes. So for once, commenting not really encouraged, unless you feel you have something burningly important to express which is best expressed in response to this particular post in this particular journal.

Hmmm... so there's a rumour of sorts doing the rounds that can be summarised as LJ is likely to become unreliable shortly and vanish in due course.

I'll admit to a certain dark amusement at the thought of bringing LJ (and possibly places like LJ Book) down simply by engendering a round of panic-stricken backing up (NB. More strictly backuppy services exist than LJ Book, I just like turning my LJ into a book once a year - some alternative back up tools are linked to in the rumour post above and its comments) however I would hate to be the person sitting there smugly going "didn't you know?" so I'm passing on the rumour and leave it to you, gentle reader, to decide the level of panic that is appropriate.

I seem to have stopped getting emails from livejournal. It's been going on for a couple of hours now. Should I blame LJ or my work spam filter?

Being largely an excuse to show off my new "Paid Account" status, my shiny new user pic and the fact that I've worked out how to convert a set of PNGs (kindly supplied by B) into an animated gif and then ruthlessly hack out frames until it comes under LJ's 40K restriction on icons.

I want more user pics. I dislike adverts. Is this sufficient justification for a paid account?

I've gotten horribly behind on LJ, both reading and posting. I'm going to try and catch up over the next couple of days, so don't be surprised if you suddenly get comments from me on weeks' old entries.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] philmophlegm and a masterly piece of internet detective work (well possibly not that masterly, I'm not exactly difficult to find!!) I now have a second blog - having started another earlier this year at Terapad... and discovered shortly thereafter that I didn't really have much to say for myself.

I guess the advantage of this one is that everyone is here and not on Terapad... although Terapad does have an RSS feed.
